The Incredible Growth of Mobile Social Apps
The growth of the mobile social apps is one of the main reasons for which mobile devices have become indispensable devices for numerous people around the world. Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram are three of the most popular social media platforms that allow users to interact and communicate in ways that were never possible before.
The last quarter of 2015 saw Facebook reporting strong earnings and a large part of that success is due to its mobile growth. In the spring of 2012, the company went public and at the time, had zero mobile ad revenue. Fast forward three years and mobile advertising makes up to 80% of the company’s ad revenue. As statistics show it, they only continue to grow when it comes to the mobile sector.
In 2015, Facebook added 253 million monthly users to their already very high base of 1.19 billion. However, the company was not the only one to grow spectacularly, as WhatsApp added 200 million users as well, and Instagram did well for themselves, too, by adding 100 million users. Shares of the world’s biggest social network soared as well, meaning that there is nowhere else to grow than up.
An incredibly popular application for mobile messages, WhatsApp is particularly trendy in Europe, parts of Asia and South America, and has experienced an incredible growth over the past few years, being set to reach the billion-user milestone in 2016. The company used to charge users a subscription fee of $0.99 per year after a free trial of 12 months, but announced at the beginning of 2016 that they will no longer do so, offering it for free.
Instagram is another social media platform that has been growing fast in the recent years, and 2016 saw a double-digit growth for this photo-based app. According to estimates, more than a third of mobile users will be on Instagram by the end of 2016, and by 2017, more than half of social network users will be using the platform. An extremely popular app with millennials, Instagram is expected to be used by nearly two-thirds of all millennials by the end of 2019.
Social media apps have opened the path to multiple other apps for mobile addicts, such as the ever increasingly popular emoji keywords, which allow users to personalize their social media experience and make their profile and post so much more attractive. The so called personalization apps make it easy for individuals to come back and spend more time in the app, simply because they feel their experience is unique. Other apps that have been growing consistently for mobile usage include games, news, media and entertainment, and so much more.
